Art Daily Anniversary (JDP #4)


...On a day like today, The Empire State Building was dedicated...


May 1, 1931
The Empire State Building is a 102-story landmark Art Deco skyscraper
in New York City at Fifth Avenue and 34th Street.

It stood as the world's tallest building for more than forty years, from its completion in 1931 until construction of the World Trade Center's North Tower was completed in 1972.

Following the destruction of the World Trade Center in 2001,
the Empire State Building once again became
the tallest building in New York City.

The Art Daily text excluded the photographer's name.

However, if the U.S.A. trilogy had a fourth volume, John Dos Passos might have used
a menage a trois of fact, fiction, and poetry to identify the photographer,
the laborer in the picture, and--most emphatically--the building dedicated
on May 1, 1931

In fact, Mr. Dos Passos did inspire another novelist to write a book about what happened
on a day like today

And Mr. Oliverio will go out on a limb and a link by stating that the photographer was
Lewis Wickes Hine
